"Of course, it's just riding a horse. It's not that hard," he said, knowing full well that if necessary he could use his ability to fly to help keep him upright so that all the bouncing from the horse didn't actually hurt him. Still, at the very least he could parrot back all of the things his instructor before the tournament had told him.
"Are you ready? Have you selected a horse you want to ride?"
"'It's just riding a horse'," she echoed with a laugh and an exaggerated roll of her eyes. "I've never stood to animals this big without the intent to have them for supper," she admitted as they rounded the front of the stables, the huffing and shuffling of the horses slowing her step down.
She shook her head. "I haven't gotten close. This is the first time I've seen real horses and I was never a 'Have a Pet' kinda kid."
"You'll be fine," Thor assured her, giving her a reassuring clap on the shoulder as they made their way into the barn. This much of what was necessary he remembered how to do, especially since it wasn't something he could just fake with being able to fly.
He walked Devi through getting the horse ready to ride and making sure the saddle was on properly. It took some time but when you were working with living things you didn't want to rush the process and end up hurting the animal. When two horses were all ready he stood back a bit.
"There, see? The difficult part is over. Sort of. Getting on can be... tricky."
The clap on her hand was taken with a chuckle but the wary look on her face and the largeness of her eyes didn't start to ease until she'd had a few minutes to introduce herself and make sure that she wasn't going to get trampled.
She knew she was a sucker; if something like that happened, she'd probably let herself get trampled, rather then hurting the creatures.
Thor's instruction made sense though - blanket underneath so there wasn't any chafing and it was more comfortable for the horse, adjusting the saddle strap that went around their undersides just right and noting they'd have to do it again once the beasts decided to stop sticking their stomachs out.
"Not the riding part?" She smirked. "I've seen enough movies; I'm sure I can manage." Gathering the reigns of one of the horses, Devi gently urged the creature out of its stall.
"Where are we going to ride them, anyway? The corral or the actual landscape?"
Thor was pleased with how closely Devi was following all of his instructions. It was clear that she felt a healthy sort of fear and respect for the horse, which was good. It was a powerful, living creature and should be treated accordingly. Once they were all ready and leading the horses out of the barn he considered her question.
"Why don't we start off in the corral and see how well you do. Then we can go from there," Thor told her. It wouldn't do any good to get going anywhere only for her to fall off over and over. Better to do that here.
Animals were here before humans were and Devi had always tried her best to respect them as well as she could. It helped that horses could be just as dangerous as they could be fun, or so modern media would have her believe.
It set her up well.
"That sounds like it has significantly less head injuries, so I won't argue," she said, following behind him. Once they got there, she stood dumbly, one hand on the saddle horn.
"Oh, well..." Thor at least managed to look a bit sheepish as he jumped up onto the horse from behind, clearly using his ability of flight to get up on it. He had tried the normal way when he first learned but had felt so stupid and fallen off so many times that he just stopped bothering to do it that way and went with this method. Besides, nothing said that you couldn't mount a horse in this manner, it was just that most people couldn't. Besides, it wasn't like the horse seemed to care one way or another.
Devi frowned at him and the ease that he mounted up, being forced to sharply note the loss of that particular limb and power. "That's cheating," she said with a pout.
Cheating or not, she stuck a foot in the stirrup and bounced a little before half jumping, pulling herself onto the horse. Or trying. With a little sound, Devi fell back to her feet. Undeterred, she tried again and got on, working to swing her leg over it's back so she could straighten with a gleeful little sound.
"The bounce. The bounce definitely helped. Don't tell me you can't do that, I refuse to believe," she said with a grin.
“I fell on my ass twice when I first tried,” Thor admitted with a laugh. Only he had to stop partway through the laugh because it was such a different sounding laugh that he’d been confused. He was more-or-less used to his voice being different but the different laugh was something new.
“Is that a good laugh? I can’t tell if my laugh is a good laugh,” he said, making a bit of a face. It would be weird to have to try and do a different laugh while in this body.
