Devi scoffed a laugh at the last scratch of text, sure that Thor had Englished incorrect, even though her brain suggested that trying to think so was a reach. It wasn't like he hadn't had the time to perfect the language. But her doubts aside, she would be glad for the company.
Having honestly never seen live horses, Devi was only brave enough to perch on the corral fence that a few of the mares were grazing in, happy enough to watch them if she couldn't do anything else as of yet. Approaching strange animals seemed like a bad idea in any situation and Devi wasn't looking to test how well she took a hoof to the chest today.
It wasn't just the risks of being hurt that worried her - Devi was also worried about accidentally hurting the horses. She might be a badass, but she never wanted to apply those skills to innocent creatures, even by accident if she could help it. Better to wait for someone who knew what they were doing.
Thor had only a minimal knowledge of horse riding and most of the was limited to what to do in the joust. To be honest even then he tended to "cheat" by flying up onto the horse instead of getting on it the normal way. But at the very least he had heard quite a bit about the proper way to ride a horse and could repeat that information back.
He was dressed in his armor, which seemed on the slightly impractical side but he wasn't going to complain much, not when that part of his magic at least worked properly and he didn't end up with what he normally wore. But the time he'd made it all the way to the stables to meet Devi he was actually starting to enjoy how comfortable the skirt was.
"Devi!" he said, grinning at the woman with arms spread out wide. "It's good to see you!"
Devi turned at the call of her name and it took her a good handful of seconds to remember that Thor had mentioned being changed, but as soon as she did, she gave him a crooked half grin and threw one leg over to straddle the fence.
"I thought you said all you had was your armor," she asked. "Where's the rest of it?"
Now she understood why chafing wouldn't be an issue - there was nothing to chafe against. Not that his legs weren't fantastic, eyed in appreciation as he walked up.
"It's nothing like the armor of other Asgardian warriors," Thor admitted. Sif certainly didn't wear anything like this, although he had to admit that it was easy to move about it. Maybe as a woman he was expected to be more acrobatic? He wasn't sure.
"I do like how it shows off my stomach," he said, taking a moment to admire his abs, which also lead to him admiring his chest as well. He had done pretty well for himself. "Maybe I'm meant to distract any of my opponents?"
"It's right outta a comic book. +10 to armor while wearing a bikini." The comment was given with a smirk and a bob of her head. The suggestion that he distract earned a grin.
"You are rather distracting. There's a lotta new curves to get distracted by. Have you gotten used to all your new goods yet? You run with those suckers?" 'Those suckers' being her ample breasts. Devi didn't know how the armor was set up for support, but it didn't look like it moved or breathed really well.
"Cause if you can't run, I'm pretty sure the bounce of a horse is gonna be real weird."
"Running is... odd," Thor admitted, making a bit of a face. It hadn't hurt, he was too durable for that, but things did feel more than a little strange when he moved quickly. Something about his hips was odd and his chest was certainly odd she was right about that.
"Hopefully later I can find things a lot more fun to do with them then have them make everything feel incredible strange when I try to move suddenly. I don't understand how you deal with it."
Devi huffed a laugh as she swung her other leg over the fence and hopped down, half leaning on the fence once she had.
"Hang upside down," she suggested with a shit-eating grin and a shrug. "You get used to it. But if nothing hurts..." A few seemingly idle steps took her backwards. "And you're still down for it. Feel like giving it a shot?"
"Of course, it's just riding a horse. It's not that hard," he said, knowing full well that if necessary he could use his ability to fly to help keep him upright so that all the bouncing from the horse didn't actually hurt him. Still, at the very least he could parrot back all of the things his instructor before the tournament had told him.
"Are you ready? Have you selected a horse you want to ride?"
"'It's just riding a horse'," she echoed with a laugh and an exaggerated roll of her eyes. "I've never stood to animals this big without the intent to have them for supper," she admitted as they rounded the front of the stables, the huffing and shuffling of the horses slowing her step down.
She shook her head. "I haven't gotten close. This is the first time I've seen real horses and I was never a 'Have a Pet' kinda kid."
"You'll be fine," Thor assured her, giving her a reassuring clap on the shoulder as they made their way into the barn. This much of what was necessary he remembered how to do, especially since it wasn't something he could just fake with being able to fly.
He walked Devi through getting the horse ready to ride and making sure the saddle was on properly. It took some time but when you were working with living things you didn't want to rush the process and end up hurting the animal. When two horses were all ready he stood back a bit.
"There, see? The difficult part is over. Sort of. Getting on can be... tricky."
The clap on her hand was taken with a chuckle but the wary look on her face and the largeness of her eyes didn't start to ease until she'd had a few minutes to introduce herself and make sure that she wasn't going to get trampled.
She knew she was a sucker; if something like that happened, she'd probably let herself get trampled, rather then hurting the creatures.
Thor's instruction made sense though - blanket underneath so there wasn't any chafing and it was more comfortable for the horse, adjusting the saddle strap that went around their undersides just right and noting they'd have to do it again once the beasts decided to stop sticking their stomachs out.
"Not the riding part?" She smirked. "I've seen enough movies; I'm sure I can manage." Gathering the reigns of one of the horses, Devi gently urged the creature out of its stall.
"Where are we going to ride them, anyway? The corral or the actual landscape?"
Thor was pleased with how closely Devi was following all of his instructions. It was clear that she felt a healthy sort of fear and respect for the horse, which was good. It was a powerful, living creature and should be treated accordingly. Once they were all ready and leading the horses out of the barn he considered her question.
"Why don't we start off in the corral and see how well you do. Then we can go from there," Thor told her. It wouldn't do any good to get going anywhere only for her to fall off over and over. Better to do that here.
Animals were here before humans were and Devi had always tried her best to respect them as well as she could. It helped that horses could be just as dangerous as they could be fun, or so modern media would have her believe.
It set her up well.
"That sounds like it has significantly less head injuries, so I won't argue," she said, following behind him. Once they got there, she stood dumbly, one hand on the saddle horn.
"Oh, well..." Thor at least managed to look a bit sheepish as he jumped up onto the horse from behind, clearly using his ability of flight to get up on it. He had tried the normal way when he first learned but had felt so stupid and fallen off so many times that he just stopped bothering to do it that way and went with this method. Besides, nothing said that you couldn't mount a horse in this manner, it was just that most people couldn't. Besides, it wasn't like the horse seemed to care one way or another.
Devi frowned at him and the ease that he mounted up, being forced to sharply note the loss of that particular limb and power. "That's cheating," she said with a pout.
Cheating or not, she stuck a foot in the stirrup and bounced a little before half jumping, pulling herself onto the horse. Or trying. With a little sound, Devi fell back to her feet. Undeterred, she tried again and got on, working to swing her leg over it's back so she could straighten with a gleeful little sound.
"The bounce. The bounce definitely helped. Don't tell me you can't do that, I refuse to believe," she said with a grin.
“I fell on my ass twice when I first tried,” Thor admitted with a laugh. Only he had to stop partway through the laugh because it was such a different sounding laugh that he’d been confused. He was more-or-less used to his voice being different but the different laugh was something new.
“Is that a good laugh? I can’t tell if my laugh is a good laugh,” he said, making a bit of a face. It would be weird to have to try and do a different laugh while in this body.
